Learning to SCUBA dive can be one of the most rewarding achievements, but it can also feel daunting. How much you enjoy it depends largely on two factors: your instructor and your learning group. Typically, dive centres assign you to random groups and instructors based on availability, meaning sometimes you get lucky, sometimes not.
My approach is different. I believe these key factors should be clear from the start. I offer 1:1 tuition and private PADI scuba courses for groups of friends and family, ensuring no strangers are involved. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet me beforehand to ensure we’re a good fit.
Learning to scuba dive takes time, and the pace varies for everyone. Some skills are picked up quickly, while others take longer, often due to factors beyond ability.
Rather than rushing students through at the same pace, I believe in being flexible. If you need extra time to master a skill or more guidance, that’s no problem. I rent a private pool for PADI Scuba courses, allowing me to tailor both pool and ocean sessions to your needs.
Although I am a PADI instructor and teach their syllabus, I focus on key areas beyond the course requirements, such as body positioning (trim) and buoyancy control. These are crucial for comfort and quality in diving, yet often overlooked. By emphasising these and other elements, I ensure my students are confident enough to dive independently, not just get through the course.
I also cover dive planning, environmental and logistical considerations, and practical aspects, so you can enjoy your new hobby without always needing a guide.
The first step to learning the scuba dive is the PADI Open Water course. As the world’s most popular course, it trains you to dive independently (with a buddy) to 18 meters deep. Read below to find out more.
PADI Open Water theory is completed online using the PADI e-learning platform. This means you can go through the content at your own pace. It also means the time I spend with you is focused on in-water training. If you're interested in face-to-face theory tution, please reach out.
Please note - don't purchase e-learning directly through PADI as this works out more expensive.
Once the PADI e-learning has been completed, it's time to get in the water. For this step, I rent a private swimming pool to start building the fundemental skills of scuba diving. The pool gives us an oppurtunity do this very slowly, ensuring you are prepared for your Open Water Dives.
Because the pool is private, you know you won't be overlooked during this critical stage.
Once the PADI Open Water skills have been mastered in the pool, we will travel to a shore-based dive site to start diving in the sea!
During this stage all of the skills you have learned are applied to an open water environment.
This is where everything starts to come together and you begin to really enjoy the sensation of being underwater.
The in-person parts of the course typicaly take 4-6 days depending on progression. Two weekends is typical for smaller groups or 1:1s.
The pool dives are near Exeter and the ocean dives are shore-based sites in Plymouth, Devon.
I'll ensure that safety comes first and provide guidance on the dive plan and associated emergency procedures
1:1 or private
All dive equipment will be provided, you'll just need lunch and a towel!
1:1 - £900
2+ people - £500 pp
The Advanced Open Water Diver course is designed to help you refine your diving abilities. During the course, you’ll focus on improving your navigation and buoyancy skills, experience deep diving, and complete three specialty dives of your choice (think of it as a sampler of different full PADI specialty course). Each specialty dive you complete counts toward earning PADI® specialty certifications.
1:1 - £700
2+ people - £400 pp
A PADI specialty is a specific area of scuba diving that you can focus on to gain more experience and expertise. These courses are designed to teach you advanced skills in a particular type of diving. When you complete a specialty course, you typically receive a PADI certification that shows you’re qualified in that specific area.
Specialty courses are a great way to tailor your diving experience to your interests, and each one helps you become a more confident and capable diver. I teach a variety of PADI specialities including: Deep, Wreck, Nitrox, Sidemount, AWARE Coral Reef Conservation, Peak Performance Buoyancy. Reach out to learn more and discuss prices.
As well as the PADI courses I teach, I also run scuba refresher courses and skills workshops. These can be for divers who haven't been in the water for a while, or those that just want a bit of tuition in a low-pressure environment.
Maybe there is a particular skill or element to your diving you'd like to spend some time on before going on an important trip. As always, these workshops are for private groups or 1:1. Reach out to learn more and discuss prices.
I'm based in Plymouth, Devon and run my courses from there. The pool I rent for the Open Water course is near Exeter and the dive sites are all shore-based sites around Plymouth.
£500 per person for two or more people, or if you want a private 1:1 course it's £900.
