I run 1:1 and private workshops for people that want to learn how to take pictures underwater. Whether you're an experienced diver or someone who prefers to stay dry (ish), scroll down to learn more.
Before diving into the depths, it’s essential to understand the foundations of photography. This session covers the key components of any photograph: exposure, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. We’ll also touch on composition, teaching you how to frame your shots to tell a compelling story. You’ll gain hands-on experience with various underwater camera types and accessories, and learn how to maintain and care for your equipment—ensuring you can confidently handle your gear in challenging underwater conditions.
Underwater photography requires a unique set of skills, starting with an understanding of how light behaves beneath the surface. This session will help you grasp the effects of water on light, including colour loss at depth and how to adapt your techniques for clearer, more vibrant images. We’ll discuss how to use both natural light and artificial lighting to your advantage, as well as the importance of buoyancy control. With expert guidance, you’ll learn how to stay stable and get the perfect shot without disturbing your surroundings.
Here’s where the real fun begins! We’ll take you into the water for a hands-on session where you can put everything you’ve learned into practice. With your camera set up and buoyancy techniques honed, you’ll get the chance to explore and photograph marine life in shallow waters. I'll be right alongside you, offering individual tips, demonstrating camera settings in real-time, and giving you personal feedback to help you improve. It’s the perfect opportunity to build your confidence while capturing some beautiful underwater moments.
After the dive, we’ll reconvene to review the photos you’ve taken. We’ll look at each image on screen, offering personalised feedback on how to improve composition, lighting, and framing. You’ll gain valuable insights into what worked well and areas for improvement. I'll also introduce you to the basics of photo editing, showing you how to enhance your images using simple tools like Lightroom or Photoshop. With these editing techniques, you’ll be able to bring out the true potential of your underwater shots.
1 full day or split into two half-day sessions.
We’ll explore a shore-based dive site in Plymouth, where you’ll find a rich diversity of marine life.
I'll ensure that safety comes first and provide guidance on the dive plan and associated emergency procedures

A strong foundation in basic photography is key to achieving good results. This session covers the fundamentals: understanding exposure, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, as well as composition tips like framing and using leading lines to draw attention to your subject. We’ll also cover how to adjust your settings for different light conditions and how to work with close-up subjects.
This session focuses on the specific environment of rockpools. You’ll learn how to identify interesting subjects like marine life, seaweed, and rocks, and how to use the natural light available to your advantage. We’ll also discuss the challenges of photographing small, often moving subjects and how to stay mindful of the delicate ecosystems you’re working within. I will share tips on how to approach and photograph wildlife without disturbing it, maintaining respect for the environment.
Now it’s time to put your skills into practice! We’ll head out to a local rockpool, where you'll be able to explore and photograph the natural wonders around you. Under my guidence, you’ll practice composing shots, using natural light, and capturing both still subjects and those in motion (such as crabs or fish). We’ll help you experiment with different angles and perspectives, so you can discover the most creative and effective ways to photograph the rockpool environment.
After the field session, we’ll review the photos you’ve taken. We'll go through each participant’s images, offering constructive feedback on composition, lighting, and subject matter. You’ll also get an introduction to basic editing techniques, where we’ll show you how to enhance your photos, improve exposure, and bring out the colours and details of your rockpool images. You'll leave with a better understanding of how to edit your photos to reflect the natural beauty of the environment.

Please reach us at jrjharris@hotmail.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.
No, I can provide cameras and lightings for students who do not have their own setup for both underwater workshops and rockpool workshops.
The focus of these workshops is learning underwater photography skills and so the diving will be as relaxing as possible to avoid unncessary distractions. To achieve this, dive sites will be shallow, accessible and easily navigable.
Absolutely, for more experienced photographers I can shift the workshops away from basic tuition to focus more on underwater elements and how photography differs in this environment.
